Tank Base Preparation Guide for Lasting Support

A full water tank can place many tonnes of load on a relatively small footprint. If the base settles, holds water or leaves part of the tank unsupported, the problem is rarely cosmetic. It can strain a poly tank wall, compromise fittings, affect a steel tank structure and make future maintenance far more difficult. This tank base preparation guide sets out what property owners should check before the tank arrives.

The right foundation is not automatically a concrete slab. It depends on the tank material, capacity, site soil, slope, local conditions and the manufacturer’s installation requirements. A small poly tank on firm ground needs a different approach from a large rainwater tank serving a home, farm shed or commercial site.

Start with the tank, not the excavation

Confirm the exact tank model and its full dimensions before ordering materials or booking machinery. The base must support the entire underside of the tank, not just its outside edge. It should also be larger than the tank footprint so the perimeter remains fully supported if minor movement occurs over time.

Check the tank supplier’s installation instructions for the required base type, diameter or width, tolerances and bedding material. Poly tanks commonly require a smooth, compacted sand or fine crushed-rock base. Steel and Aquaplate tanks may require a prepared pad, concrete ring beam or an engineered slab, depending on the design and capacity. Following those requirements protects the tank warranty and avoids guessing on a structural issue.

Calculate the working load early. One litre of water weighs approximately one kilogram, so a 22,500-litre tank holds more than 22 tonnes when full, before allowing for the tank itself. That weight must be transferred evenly into stable ground.

Choose a site that works after installation

A tank location should be practical for water collection, pump connection and access, but it also needs suitable ground conditions. Avoid low points where runoff collects, recently filled ground, soft clay, areas affected by tree roots and sites close to retaining walls unless the base has been professionally assessed.

A level site is preferable, but a gentle natural slope can be cut and prepared correctly. Do not try to level the tank by building up one side with loose soil. Fill material needs to be placed in controlled layers and compacted properly. On steep, unstable or heavily cut-and-fill sites, speak with a qualified installer, engineer or earthworks contractor before proceeding.

Allow enough clear space around the tank for installation and ongoing work. You will need room to connect downpipes, inspect the inlet screen, service a pump, clean the tank and reach valves. Consider delivery access as well. A truck or crane may need a firm approach, adequate turning space and clearance from powerlines, branches and buildings.

Tank base preparation guide: build the foundation in layers

Once the position is set out, remove grass, organic material, roots and loose topsoil. These materials decompose and shift, which can lead to settlement below the tank. Excavate until you reach firm, suitable subgrade, keeping the prepared area wider than the finished tank base.

The next steps vary with soil conditions and tank specifications, but the principle is consistent: create a uniform, well-compacted platform with no high spots, hollows, stones or sharp debris. A typical prepared base may include a compacted sub-base of suitable road base or crushed material, followed by a fine bedding layer where approved for the tank type.

Place fill in shallow layers and compact each layer with suitable equipment. Adding a deep layer and compacting only the top can leave soft material underneath. On a larger tank, that hidden weakness may not show until the tank is partly or fully filled.

The finished surface should be flat and level in every direction. A base can look level to the eye while still having enough fall to concentrate load on one section of the tank floor. Use a long straightedge, string line or laser level to check the surface across several points. Remove stones, clods and other material that could create pressure points.

For poly tanks, do not use a base with protruding aggregate, uneven pavers, timber sleepers or a raised outer edge that leaves the centre unsupported. The tank bottom needs continuous support. For steel tanks, do not substitute a different foundation system without confirming it is suitable for that specific tank design.

Manage water before it reaches the base

Drainage is one of the most overlooked parts of tank installation. Water running towards the base can soften soil, wash away fine material and create uneven support. This is particularly relevant in coastal and regional areas with intense rainfall, reactive soils or sloping blocks.

Grade surrounding ground so surface water drains away from the tank. Where needed, install diversion drains, swales or agricultural drainage to intercept runoff before it reaches the prepared pad. Keep roof overflow and tank overflow directed to a suitable legal discharge point, well clear of the foundation.

Do not position a tank where a leaking downpipe, overflowing gutter or driveway runoff continually discharges beside it. A properly prepared base cannot perform as intended if it is repeatedly saturated. On wet sites, additional drainage design or engineering may be required.

Concrete bases: useful, but not always the answer

A concrete slab can provide an excellent foundation where it is correctly designed, reinforced and constructed on suitable subgrade. It is often appropriate for certain steel tanks, commercial applications, constrained sites and installations where a clean, permanent surface is preferred.

However, concrete does not fix poor ground preparation. A slab poured over loose fill or poorly drained soil can crack, tilt or settle. It must be level, fully support the tank and be finished without ridges, exposed aggregate or sharp edges. The slab dimensions, thickness and reinforcement should suit the tank manufacturer’s requirements and local site conditions.

For many poly tanks, a correctly compacted granular base is a practical and cost-effective option. It allows drainage and can be easier to adjust than concrete. The best choice depends on the tank and the site, not on which material appears more permanent.

Check plumbing and access before delivery day

A completed base is the ideal time to plan the connections around it. Confirm the direction of the tank inlet, overflow and outlet, and allow for a pump cover, pressure controller, filtration equipment and pipework. If water will supply a home, consider where first-flush devices, strainers, filters and UV equipment will sit so they remain accessible for servicing.

Keep the tank outlet accessible and protect pipework from vehicles, livestock and accidental damage. If the tank is connected to a pump, allow a stable, weather-protected location nearby where practical. Electrical work must be completed by a licensed electrician.

Before delivery, walk the route from the road or driveway to the pad. Check gates, tight corners, overhead obstructions, soft ground and slopes. It is far easier to move a fence panel or trim a branch before a loaded delivery vehicle arrives than on installation day.

A final pre-installation check

Before the tank is placed, inspect the pad one more time. It should be clean, dry where possible, fully compacted, level and free of sharp objects. Confirm its dimensions against the tank specification and make sure drainage paths have not been blocked by excavation spoil or building materials.
