Why Replace Your UV Lamp Annually?

UV water treatment systems rely on consistent UV-C radiation output to effectively disinfect water. Although a UV lamp may continue to illuminate after extended use, the germicidal intensity gradually decreases over time.

Our UV lamps are rated for approximately 9,000 hours of operation (12 months). After this period, UV output can no longer be guaranteed at the levels required for effective water sanitisation.

For optimal protection, we recommend replacing the UV lamp every 12 months.

UV System Maintenance Guide

Ultraviolet water treatment systems are measured by the UV dose delivered to the water, expressed as millijoules per square centimetre (mJ/cm²).

• 30mJ/cm² is considered the standard level of UV disinfection.
• 40mJ/cm² is generally regarded as the minimum dose required to meet Australian Drinking Water Guidelines for effective microbial treatment.

Quartz Sleeve Maintenance

The UV lamp operates inside a protective quartz sleeve (also known as a quartz thimble), which prevents water from contacting the electrical components while allowing UV-C light to pass through efficiently.

Quartz is used because it offers:

• High thermal resistance
• Superior durability and strength

Over time, the quartz sleeve can experience a process known as solarisation, where microscopic changes within the glass reduce UV transparency. Additionally, contaminants such as:

• Tannins
• Biofilm
• Algae
• Mineral scale

can accumulate on the sleeve surface, reducing the amount of UV light reaching the water.

To maintain maximum disinfection performance, we recommend replacing the quartz sleeve every 1–2 years and cleaning it during routine maintenance inspections.
